Second source sheet metal supplier transfer with approved sample, inspection gauges and qualified production line

Supplier Transfer and Backup Capacity

Need a Reliable Second Source for Existing Sheet Metal Parts?

Changing a sheet metal supplier is not the same as launching a new design. The part already has a history: approved dimensions, appearance expectations, assembly behavior, packaging rules and lessons that may never have made it onto the drawing.

At Hengtai Leading Technology, we treat supplier transfer as a controlled replication and qualification project.

Why Buyers Add a Second Source

We are often approached when the existing supplier is still active but the purchasing team needs protection against a single point of failure. In other cases, the customer needs a complete transfer because lead time, communication, capacity, quality or commercial conditions are no longer acceptable.

Backup capacity for business continuity.

Long or unstable lead times from the incumbent supplier.

Quality variation between production batches.

Need for a China manufacturing option for an existing product.

Rapid growth that exceeds current supplier capacity.

Cost pressure on mature OEM components.

Factory closure, ownership change or supplier consolidation.

Need to combine multiple fabricated parts under one manufacturing partner.

Our Supplier Transfer Process

A controlled transfer keeps approved requirements visible from the first drawing review through scheduled production.

1

Baseline the released design. We confirm current drawing revision, 3D model, BOM, material, finish, hardware and quality requirements.

2

Capture the unwritten requirements. Photos, approved samples, inspection reports and known assembly issues help us understand what the drawing alone cannot show.

3

Review manufacturability without changing the approved intent. We flag risks, but we do not silently alter geometry or finish specifications.

4

Build and inspect a first article or representative pilot lot. Critical dimensions, fit and cosmetic requirements are verified against the agreed acceptance criteria.

5

Close differences before repeat production. Any deviation, clarification or approved change is recorded into the manufacturing package.

6

Move into scheduled production only after the qualification route is agreed.

What Makes a Good Transfer Package

Document / Sample Why It Helps
Released 2D drawingDefines dimensions, tolerances, notes and finish requirements.
3D modelClarifies geometry and supports programming and assembly review.
Approved physical sampleShows real-world fit and cosmetic expectations.
Inspection reportIdentifies critical dimensions and prior acceptance criteria.
BOM / hardware listPrevents substitutions or missing purchased components.
Packaging photos/specProtects cosmetic parts and reduces transit-related disputes.
Annual demand / order patternLets us plan capacity, material and production batch size.

We Can Transfer More Than Simple Parts

Supplier transfer is especially valuable when the program includes multiple related components. We manufacture sheet metal cabinets, chassis, frames, weldments and electrical enclosures, with assembly support for projects that need more than individual fabricated pieces.

First Article Before Full Transfer

For an approved production part, we normally recommend beginning with a representative sample or pilot quantity rather than transferring the entire annual demand immediately. This gives both teams a controlled opportunity to confirm finish, fit, inspection method, packaging and communication. Our supplier-selection guide also explains the process and quality evidence professional buyers should verify before moving a program.

Keep the Incumbent Design, Improve the Supply Chain

A second source does not need to become a redesign project. Where the current part performs well, our job is to reproduce it reliably. If we see an opportunity for a future cost or manufacturability improvement, we keep that recommendation separate from the released transfer build so your engineering team stays in control.

Start with One Representative Part Number

Send us the current drawing, annual volume and any approved sample or inspection record. We will map the qualification steps needed to establish Hengtai as a second source.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you manufacture directly from an approved sample?

A sample is helpful, but we strongly prefer a controlled drawing or 3D model as the primary specification. We use the sample to understand finish, fit and practical details that may not be fully documented.

Do you need our current supplier information?

No. We need the technical and quality requirements for the part, not confidential information about your incumbent supplier.

Can you support a backup source without taking the full program?

Yes. Qualification can be structured around a second-source or contingency role, subject to the expected order pattern and project requirements.
